Who We Are

Under No Child Left Behind (NCLB), when a Title I, Part A campus is identified for Stage 2, 3, 4, or 5 of the School Improvement Program (SIP), the LEA is required to arrange for the provision of SES for students from low-income families. For purposes of the School Improvement Program (SIP), supplemental educational services are defined as tutoring and other supplemental academic enrichment services that are in addition to instruction provided during the school day and are of high quality, research-based, and specifically designed to increase the academic achievement of eligible children on the state assessment and to assist them in attaining proficiency in meeting the state's academic achievement standards. SES is not homework assistance.

Our Purpose

  • Consult with parents, teachers, districts, and interested members of the public to promote maximum participation by providers to ensure, to the extent practicable, that parents have as many choices as possible.
  • Provide an annual notice to potential providers informing them of the process for obtaining approval to be a provider of supplemental educational services.
  • Develop and apply objective criteria for approving potential providers.
  • Maintain an updated list of approved providers across the state by district from which parents may select.
  • Develop, implement, and publicly report on standards and techniques for monitoring the quality and effectiveness of tutoring services offered by approved providers.
  • Remove from the state approved list any approved providers that fail, for two consecutive years, to contribute to increasing the academic proficiency of students served by the providers.
  • Protect the privacy of students who are eligible for or receive supplemental educational services.

Our Goals

The goal of SES is to increase eligible students' academic achievement in a subject or subjects that the State includes in its ESEA assessments under Section 1111 of the ESEA, which must include reading/language arts, mathematics, and science, as well as English language proficiency for students with limited English proficiency (LEP).

Current Functions

SES provide extra academic assistance for eligible children. Students from low-income families who are attending Title I schools that are in their second year of school improvement (i.e., have not made AYP for three years), in corrective action, or in restructuring status are eligible to receive these services.
